The either-slot count answers how many species have a type at all. A Water/Flying species contributes once to Water and once to Flying, so the 18 type totals add up to 1,551 rather than 1,025. No species is counted twice within the same type.
The primary-type count assigns every species to only the first type on its default variety. Those 18 groups add up to exactly 1,025 and match the grouping used by the Pokédex Type Treemap.
Flying appears on 109 species when secondary types count, placing it fourth overall. Only nine species use Flying as their primary type in this snapshot, placing it last under the treemap's primary-type grouping.
That contrast is why a claim such as “the rarest Pokémon type” is incomplete without a stated counting method. Ice is rarest by either-slot coverage, while Flying is the smallest primary-type group.
The dataset contains one record for each species from Bulbasaur through Pecharunt, National Pokédex numbers 1–1025, spanning Generations I–IX. It uses the default variety for each species.
The page is versioned because the Pokédex continues to change. Newly announced species, later National Pokédex numbers, alternate forms, regional forms, Mega Evolutions, and other non-default varieties are outside this result until the canonical dataset is deliberately updated and reviewed.

Counts are recomputed from the 1,025 unique species records in the canonical Pokémon Species Treemap Dataset. The either-slot calculation counts each species once for every distinct type in its types array. The primary calculation counts only primaryType. Percentages divide either-slot counts by 1,025 and round to one decimal place.
